Five for Mo as Oldham overwhelm Mayfield in Challenge Cup

Mo Agoro scored five tries as Oldham thumped Rochdale Mayfield 60-10 to set up a Betfred Challenge Cup 3rd round tie at home to Barrow.

The Roughyeds' right edge of Agoro and Iain Thornley scored seven of Oldham's 12 tries, with Kieran Dixon also helping him to a couple in a routine lunchtime win at Boundary Park.

Head coach Sean Long selected a strong team for a third match in just seven days, and benefited from an explosive start that saw Agoro score a hat-trick inside the first 17 minutes.
Iain Thornley sent the powerful winger in for an easy opener, Agoro strolled in for another straight-forward second before a terrific individual run made it 18-6, Dixon adding two of three conversion attempts from the touchline.

Dixon then helped himself to a try in the left corner after a sweeping passing move from right to left, before Mayfield got on the board through Ben Metcalfe, but parity was restored when full-back Jack Johnson raced through the line on a kick return to send Jumah Sambou in for a 26-4 half-time lead.

Two quick-fire Thornley tries at the start of the second half gave Oldham even more breathing room, before Pat Moran sent Ted Chapelhow in for his first of the season as the home side powered into a 40-4 lead.

Agoro then helped himself to two more, both set-up by Thornley with whom Mayfield could not cope. Josh Drinkwater grabbed his first try in Oldham colours when he touched down a loose ball behind the posts after a Mayfield mistake, and Dixon grabbed his second when he raced away in front of the Joe Royle Stand after gobbling up a loose ball.

Mayfield had the final say when Higgs finished smartly in the right corner, but it was Oldham's day as five-try Agoro grabbed the headlines.

"It was all about the inside work and I am just there to finish it off," the winger told Roughyeds TV.

Iain is class, his talk is class and his delivery is amazing as well. He makes my job easy as he is an amazing player."

Mayfield brought a lot of energy and intensity. They worked hard for each other and really made it hard for us."

After a hectic end to January, Oldham now have a weekend off before that third round tie in a fortnight's time, with the new Championship season kicking off the following weekend at home to York.
