Nisbet commits his future to Oldham

Roughyeds have completed an important bit of business with outside back Tom Nisbet agreeing a deal to extend his stay at Oldham.

Nisbet, the only player to have started every game for the club this year, has signed a new contract running until the end of the 2027 season, with the option of a further year.

"I've chosen to stay on and I'm looking forward to it," he said.

You can expect the same enthusiasm and the same amount of hard work. Hopefully we can keep building on what we're doing this year.

Playing under Alan Kilshaw is different to how I was coached last year – it's a bit more of an aggresive coaching style and that suits me and how I play.

We're still building. We’re still miles away from what we want to be and the squad we’re building for next year, I think, is going to be just as good as this year, if not better."

Signed from Queensland Cup side Townsville Blackhawks, Nisbet has scored 13 tries for Oldham in 2026.

The Saints academy product has proved his versatility this year, featuring on the wing and at centre while also filling in at full-back, as well as having the ability to slot into the second row if required.

Roughyeds boss Alan Kilshaw said he was delighted to keep Tom at the club.

"Tom has been a really important part of what we’ve done this season and his versatility has been a huge asset to us," he said.

He’s shown his quality in all three positions he’s played, adapted really well to whatever role we’ve asked him to take on and, importantly, he’s been incredibly durable, playing in every game this season.

He’s a player who brings a really good standard to the group and someone we know we can rely on week in, week out.

He also has a great habit of challenging the coaching staff in most training sessions and games – sometimes probably a little more than we’d like! – but that competitive edge is part of what makes Tom the player he is.

We’re delighted to have him committed to the club and looking forward to seeing him continue to develop and contribute over the coming seasons."

Nisbet first pulled on the Roughyeds shirt back in 2021 while on loan from St Helens, finding himself on the wrong end of the law on his debut following a high tackle.

Five years on, that competitive edge remains a big part of his game.

Nisbet has brought plenty of bite to Alan Kilshaw’s side this year, combining his attacking threat and versatility with the determination that has made him a key part of the Roughyeds squad.

"I’ve still got that edge to me," he added.

I think I’ve calmed down a little bit – I’ve not had a red card this year, touch wood.

I’m very passionate on the field – away from the field I’m actually a very relaxed guy but I’m a completely different bloke on it.

Before coming to Oldham, Nisbet made appearances for Leigh, Widnes and Rochdale, but it is with the Roughyeds that he has really found his home.

Five years from that eventful first appearance in 2021, Nisbet has become a mainstay of the Oldham side – and Roughyeds are delighted to have him on board for 2027.
