Tyrer and Astley Hit Scoring Milestones

Team News

PROLIFIC left-wing try scorer Cian Tyrer, who came to Oldham under his own steam and asked for a trial, and fleet-of-foot half-back Logan Astley, from Wigan, each hit personal scoring milestones for Roughyeds in their 30-6 win against Hunslet at Boundary Park.

We are indebted to the Oldham Heritage Trust for pointing out that, prior to this match, Tyrer had amassed 94 points for Roughyeds with 19 tries and nine goals. He added another 18 points here (three tries and three goals) to go well passed the 100-mark while Logan took his Oldham tally to 102 points with a solitary try. Going back to the days when he played for us at Whitebank on an add-hoc basis from Wigan, he has now scored 20 tries and 11 goals, writes ROGER HALSTEAD

Tyrer tops the league list with 23 tries, but one of those was for Workington when he was up there on loan before he returned to Oldham to set the ball rolling with six tries at Hunslet early this season. He has never looked back.

Other try scorers in this latest win over Hunslet were PLT and Ben Aldridge.

Hunslet pegged it back to 10-6 at one stage, but it all came good in the end with 20 unanswered points keeping us on top of the table despite Keighley’s comfortable win at Workington.

Talking of Workington, where we won last week, Sean Long took the opportunity of presenting Oldham Heritage certificates to Anthony Murray, Carl Forber and Dave Eccleston, while Richard Lepori, who was Town’s man of the match, will receive his at a later date.

Yesterday, it was my absolute pleasure to renew acquaintance in the Boundary Suite with the likes of Ray Hill, Mrs Hill and former Oldham captain Rob Roberts (Two Bobs), who was interviewed pre-match by Braddy and then received his Heritage certificate on the pitch at half-time.

“It’s always a pleasure to come back to Oldham,”

said Two Bobs, whose son, Josh Jordan-Roberts, played in the second-row for Hunslet. Former Oldham forward Matty Fletcher was in the front-row.
