Wildie signs on for 2027

In a major boost for Oldham, captain Matty Wildie has agreed a one-year contract extension with the option of a further year.

Wildie has captained the Roughyeds for the past two seasons and was one of the first signings made ahead of the club’s League One title-winning campaign in 2024, making him one of the longest-serving members of the current squad.

The 35-year-old will enter his fourth season with Oldham in 2027, with his new deal also seeing him take on coaching responsibilities alongside his playing duties.

Wildie will put his more than 300 career appearances to good use, supporting the coaching of the Roughyeds’ attack.

"I’ve really enjoyed my time at Oldham over the past few years and I’m delighted to get it over the line," said Wildie

"’I've also agreed to do a little bit of coaching as well. When my playing career is finished, it’s a path that I’d like to go down.

My body is feeling good at the minute and I wouldn’t have signed again if I didn’t think so.

It has been great playing with the group this year… we’ve stayed really tight and continued to perform well and long may that continue and we can have a good run in these play-offs.”

Having made his professional debut for hometown club Wakefield Trinity in 2010, Wildie has gone on to represent Batley, Doncaster, Dewsbury, Featherstone, Bradford and Leigh in his career so far.

He has made 30 appearances for Oldham this season – his highest tally in a single campaign since 2018 – and has featured 72 times for the club since joining ahead of the 2024 season.

Roughyeds boss Alan Kilshaw believes Wildie’s influence will be just as valuable off the field as it has been on it.

“Matty has been a huge part of what we have built here both as a player and as our captain,” he said.

I’m delighted that he’ll be staying with us and continuing to play an important role within the club.

His leadership, experience and understanding of the game is hugely valuable to us, and we’re now also going to utilise those qualities within our coaching staff.

Matty will support the coaching of our attack, with a particular focus on the spine and individual player development.

He has a really good understanding of what it takes to play at this level, and I think he can have a big impact on helping our players develop and improving us as an attacking team.

It’s great to have our captain continuing to lead from the front, both on and off the field.”

Having played such an important role in Oldham’s progress since joining the club – with only two of his appearances coming from the bench – Roughyeds are delighted that Wildie will continue to play a key role both on and off the field in 2027.
