Winning run rolls on as Roughyeds overcome Halifax

Oldham extended their winning run to 14 consecutive league matches with an impressive 36-18 victory over Halifax Panthers at Boundary Park.

Back on home soil for the first time in seven weeks, Alan Kilshaw's side produced another dominant display in front of the Roughyeds faithful.

Halifax started brightly and forced Roughyeds into a pair of early goal-line drop-outs, but it was Oldham who struck first. Adam Milner spotted a gap in the defensive line and powered his way over to open the scoring.

The visitors responded quickly as Lloyd Roby's cut-out pass found Ben Will, who crossed in the corner to level the scores.

Oldham soon regained control of the contest. Jake Bibby was held up just short after a powerful run, but the home side made their pressure count moments later when Ben Davies found space to cross after the ball was moved swiftly through the hands.

A flowing attacking move then saw Josh Drinkwater combine with Milner, whose well-timed offload sent Ted Chapelhow charging through to score and extend the advantage.

Roughyeds continued to build momentum, adding another through Matty Ashurst after Matty Wildie produced a clever short pass close to the line, allowing the back-rower to walk over.

Oldham remained firmly on top and came close to adding further tries, with Tom Nisbet, Brad Day and Owen Farnworth all going close during a sustained spell of pressure.

Halifax reduced the deficit before the interval when Will, after more than a hint of a forward pass, crossed for his second try, but the Roughyeds responded in perfect fashion as Brad Day powered over beneath the posts.

Morgan Smith then added a penalty shortly before the break to give Oldham a commanding half-time advantage.

The visitors enjoyed a brighter start to the second half, with Will completing his hat-trick in the corner following a well-worked move.

Oldham, however, remained in control. Ben Davies grabbed his second try of the afternoon to maintain the Roughyeds' cushion before Adam Tangata added a late score for Halifax.

Roughyeds comfortably saw out the closing stages to keep their remarkable run going.
