Teenager Marcus Geener has underlined his fierce ambition to make it to the top, as he tells boss Sean Long he just needs one chance to make his mark at Oldham.
The Waterhead star has spent the entire pre-season with Oldham since signing a one-year deal, and hopes to get an opportunity this month with games coming thick and fast against Rochdale Hornets in the Law Cup on Wednesday night and Rochdale Mayfield in the Challenge Cup on Sunday.
Geener has already been enjoying Challenge Cup success too, as he starred for Waterhead on Saturday, scoring the dramatic golden-point try to win their Challenge Cup tie against Leigh Miners live on the BBC.
And speaking exclusively to Roughyeds TV, Geener has revealed how much he has already learned as a player and person from his time with Roughyeds.
"I have really enjoyed it so far, they are long days and nights but I enjoy coming especially now we are building up to games. I know that if I can put my good self out there I might put myself in for a shout. If not them I am still learning and I can take it to Waterhead at the weekend instead.
I have thought about playing for Oldham since I was a little kid. Even just one game. At the start of the season I got told that I probably won't play, so I have had in my head to get one game and I'm confident that I will do quite well.
I am dying just to get that one chance and I know how hard it will be. But when I do it it will be a great feeling."
Geener says that training three times a week around experienced professionals and coaching staff has already had a huge impact.
"I have got a lot more professional with it, put quite a bit of weight on which is one thing I knew I needed to do. Skills-wise I am thinking a lot more. Little details where I am not used to thinking, all of a sudden I am thinking where I need to go. I am feeling a lot more comfortable when I am defending and picking what lines to run in attack.
This is the type of stuff that you don't pick up at amateur. Getting your arms over, techniques to make the game quicker. All this I need to learn as I don't know it and will make a big difference when I play."
