Match Preview: Hunslet v Oldham

Oldham start a run of away games with a trip to Hunslet, looking to build on what was arguably the Roughyeds' most complete performance of the season to beat Halifax last weekend.

Sean Long's men are 4th in the Betfred Championship table and could go 3rd with a victory in Leeds heading into a mini-break for Cup final weekend.

Team News

Oldham came through the win over Halifax relatively unscathed and are able to add outside back Jack Johnson to the squad after injury.

Head coach Sean Long discusses his preparations for the Hunslet game and reflects on the season so far here.
Experienced forward Elijah Taylor is also back in contention after a calf problem and joins a relatively stable squad from last week.

French winger Mathieu Pons impressed on debut against the Panthers and is again included, as is new recruit Zane Musgrove.

Forward Adam Lawton this week linked up with Widnes for a short-term loan so is not involved, while fellow forwards Pat Moran, Owen Farnworth and Ben Foster will pick up game time on dual registration with Rochdale.

Captain Jordan Turner continues to recover from a knee issue while fellow centres Iain Thornley and Jumah Sambou, winger Kieran Dixon and vice-captain Matty Wildie remain out long-term.

Brad Gallagher, Ben O'Keefe and McKenzie Yei continue their drive back to full fitness.

The Opposition

Hunslet gained promotion to the Championship through the League 1 playoffs last year having finished 4th during the regular season.

This is their first season back in the second tier since 2015 and the Leeds-based side sit bottom on the table with four points from their opening 10 matches, winning twice.

Those victories have both come in the last four games and both away from home, against Batley and Sheffield - two sides against whom Oldham have had fierce contests this year.

There are signs therefore that Dean Muir's side are coming into a bit of form and there is a familiar face in the opposition line-up in the shape of former Roughyeds winger Mackenzie Turner. Look out too for former Super League flyer Greg Eden and ex Halifax forward Kevin Larroyer.

In the two games between the sides last season Oldham came out on top, with a 30-6 win at Boundary Park and a thumping 62-0 success in Leeds which saw Cian Tyrer score six tries to become the first Oldham player since 1960 to score a double hat-trick in a single game.
