Oldham and Sheffield Eagles will join forces on Saturday 21st March to raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day 2026 by wearing “odd socks” during our Betfred Championship Round 7 clash.
Players from both clubs will step onto the field with one home sock and one away sock, symbolising the beauty of difference and inclusion.
World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually on the 21st of March, a date chosen to highlight the unique 21st chromosome, which is present in triplicate in people with Down’s syndrome. The “odd socks” initiative takes inspiration from the chromosome’s sock-like appearance and has become a universal symbol of celebrating diversity and raising awareness about Down syndrome.
The rugby league community has long been committed to promoting inclusion, and this initiative reinforces that ethos: difference is embraced, and everyone has a place in the sport.
By wearing your funkiest, most eye-catching socks on Saturday March 21st you can start a conversation about learning disabilities and show your support. Make sure you follow Sheffield Mencap and Gateway on social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and share photos and videos of you rocking your socks tagged with #RockYourSocksSheffield.
By joining together across multiple teams and fixtures, Oldham and Sheffield Eagles hope to amplify awareness of Down syndrome and promote a culture of inclusion and respect within rugby league and beyond.
