Ruthless Roughyeds hammer Workington

Roughyeds ran riot over Workington Town as they stormed to a sixth straight league victory at Bower Fold

For the second week running, Oldham notched over 70 points with head coach Alan Kilshaw praising his side’s dominance.

“We were ruthless,” said the Roughyeds boss. “We were at 90% completion in the first half and we were clinical.

I was disappointed with how their try came about in the first half – again it was off the back of ill-discipline.

But you can’t be too disappointed when you put a scoreline like that on a decent opposition.”

Kilshaw made a number of changes to the side, handing Kieran Dixon his first start since March and the switch more than paid off.

It took just three minutes for Dixon to fire through, giving Oldham the lead, and he soon grabbed another, leaving Workington stunned.

“He played tough,” said Kilshaw. “He cleaned up some good kicks as well.

He played well and I am pleased for Kieran – it gives us a headache going into next week.”

Riley Dean got Oldham’s third try after darting through a gap, before one of the moments of the match followed: a Jaron Purcell breakaway, then a 40-metre dash from Chapelhow, who carried two tacklers with him to score.

Bayley Liu then battled his way over before Workington responded through Corkill. Oldham soon reasserted their authority via Matty Ashurst who collected a Josh Drinkwater offload to score on his 400th career appearance.

Dean grabbed another and managed to complete a first-half hat-trick as the hooter sounded with Workington powerless.

Oldham took a while to get going in the second forty, as Workington attempted to restore pride, but normal service resumed just before the hour mark when Ewan Moore got in on the act.

Bayley Liu powered over for a second before some class from Luke Forber in plucking Drinkwater’s high kick out of the sky, usurping Donaghy to score under the posts.

Ewan Moore added another before Sam Littler wrapped things up, as he crashed over from close range to mark his debut with a try.

“We are in a good spot,” added Kilshaw. “We know there’s some big challenges ahead, but we’re looking forward to them.”
