Match Preview: Sheffield v Oldham

28/03/2025

Oldham head back on the road looking to build on last weekend's impressive home win over London Broncos, with a tough trip to last year's 1895 Cup finalists Sheffield Eagles.

Roughyeds' first road trip of the Betfred Championship season brought defeat at Barrow, so Sean Long will be demanding the same level of hunger and intensity that saw his side overpower London at Boundary Park last weekend.

Team News

Long suffered injuries to half-backs Riley Dean and Danny Craven against London, and Dean misses out this week through concussion protocols. Craven limped off the field with a knee injury but tests this week have alleviated fears of serious injury and he is named in the 21-man squad.

Young winger Nathan Lowe retains his place after a try-scoring debut on dual registration from Wigan, but team-mate Josh Cartwright drops out of the squad.

Centre Ben O'Keefe was a late withdrawal last weekend after picking up an injury in the final training session and again misses out. Still out are Iain Thornley, Mo Agoro, Logan Astley, George Hirst and Mckenzie Yei, while Jumah Sambou serves the second game of his suspension.

Hooker Bailey Aldridge is back, with Jay Chapelhow also looking to be involved after missing out last week.

Squad in full: 2. Kieran Dixon, 3. Jordan Turner, 6. Danny Craven, 8. Gil Dudson, 9. Matty Wildie, 10. Owen Farnworth, 11. Matty Ashurst, 12. Adam Lawton, 13. Adam Milner, 14. Bailey Aldridge, 15. Jay Chapelhow, 16. Pat Moran, 17. Elijah Taylor, 19. Ted Chapelhow, 20. Jack Johnson, 21. Lewis Baxter, 22. Cian Tyrer, 23. Josh Drinkwater, 27. Ben Foster. 31. Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e, 35. Nathan Lowe.

The Opposition

Sheffield Eagles have won one and lost two of their three games so far and head into the weekend in 9th spot in the early Championship table.

With one of the top coaches in the game in former Castleford and Batley boss Craig Lingard, the Eagles produced an impressive 19-12 away win at Featherstone earlier this month to underline their credentials, having endured a tough opening to the campaign in February with defeats at Widnes and at home to Halifax.

In half-back Morgan Smith they have one of the Championship's top try scorers, with the former Hull FC and Wakefield man having already crossed four times.
