Oldham hammered Hunslet 44-0 to secure back-to-back victories and a second defensive shutout of the season.

In what were horrible weather conditions at Bower Fold, Roughyeds meant business with opponents Hunslet scarcely threatening the Roughyeds line.

Recent performances have seen Oldham struggle for consistency, but this afternoon, very little went wrong for Alan Kilshaw’s side.

It could have been a very different story, given the challenging conditions – often considered a leveller – and the late loss of Owen Farnworth on the morning of the game after his partner went into labour. Yet Oldham remained completely unfazed.

Roughyeds will undoubtedly face sterner tests than the one posed by Hunslet, but they have proven far from pushovers this season. Despite the Leeds side registering just a single win, they came close to upsetting both Barrow and Widnes in recent weeks, underlining the threat they carried going into the game.

Proving to be quite the find from Down Under, hooker Cole Geyer continued his fine form, while his Aussie counterpart Jaron Purcell also put in a terrific shift, constantly making metres for Roughyeds.

Oldham got to work immediately, and Jake Bibby was first on the scoresheet after diving over in the corner off a nice Matty Ashurst pass.

The lead was soon doubled, this time full-back Jack Walker going over after he capitalised on an Eddie Battye fumble from Josh Drinkwater’s low kick.

Ben Davies grabbed Oldham’s third, taking advantage of the wide gaps across the Hunslet goal-line.

Roughyeds wanted more. Camped on the Hunslet line, Matty Wildie found Ashurst, and he strolled through for one of the simplest scores Oldham will get.

Ben Davies halted Abram in his tracks just as he looked set to break through, wrenching the ball free from his grasp. Walker seized the loose ball and burst away, weaving left and right to evade the Hunslet defenders before racing over to extend the lead to 26–0.

Just before half-time, Ryan Lannon strolled through from close-range – a fitting reward on his 200th career appearance.

After the break, Oldham couldn’t quite replicate the intensity of their first-half performance, yet Hunslet still struggled to break through in the Roughyeds’ final third.

A flash of brilliance from Morgan Smith—striking the ball with the outside of his boot—caught Hunslet cold, allowing Tom Nisbet to gather and touch down in the corner, extending the lead to 38–0.

Josh Drinkwater put the finishing touch on a dominant display, crossing for Oldham’s eighth try. The half-back initially shaped to move the ball wide, but spotting a huge gap in the defence, he accelerated through it to compound Hunslet’s misery.
