Oldham produced another professional performance to crush Hunslet 54-4 and head into the mid-season mini break in third place in the Betfred Championship.

Wingers Mathieu Pons and Jack Johnson scored two tries each with props Ted Chapelhow and Gil Dudson also crossing as Hunslet had no answer to the Roughyeds in South Leeds.

“It was a good day at the office,” head coach Sean Long told Roughyeds TV, as his side followed up last week’s blitz of Halifax with another dominant display.

It could have been a banana skin if we had underestimated Hunslet but we didn’t do that and the first half was outstanding. We only made one error in the first half and we were really calm and aggressive at the right time.”

That impressive first period yielded seven unanswered tries as the Roughyeds roared into a 38-0 interval lead.

Skipper Josh Drinkwater dummied through for the opener after eight minutes following an earlier disallowed score, Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e adjudged offside in touching down Drinkwater’s grubber through.

Frenchman Pons then continued a fine start to his Oldham career when he pounced on another Drinkwater grubber, before a sweeping left to right move finished with Johnson crossing in the corner.

Pons produced a flying finish in the left corner for his second after PLT had broken from deep and, after Hunslet had sent the restart out on the full, PLT then jinked through on his own for a 26-0 lead.

Danny Craven then had a try ruled out for obstruction but there was more to come as Eloi Pelissier sent Dudson in under the posts and Ryan Lannon ran in from deep, Drinkwater kicking five of seven for a sizeable half-time advantage.

After a slightly scrappy opening to the second period Oldham found their groove once more, Pelissier dummying over for his first club try and Chapelhow producing the champagne moment to run clear from Drinkwater’s latest line break – the Australian had George Hirst and Chapelhow supporting, with Ted sent clear on the inside.

Johnson grabbed his second after another sweeping left to right move, Ben Davies missing the final kick with Drinkwater off the field as a precaution with a tight hamstring.

Long wanted a shutout but was out of luck when the home side grabbed a late consolation in the corner.

“We spoke about beating Halifax and Hunslet to be in the top four, so with 12 games to go now we reset and come back in a really good position,” said the head coach whose side have the next two weekends off.

The Chapelhow try shows the effort in this team. Numbers in the frame, and if there are two props supporting Drinky it is really good and those two guys were outstanding.

Pons too has been really good. He carries strong out of back field and if he gets a chance he will finish it.

We have got to a semi-final and are in the top four but we need to come back for the second half of the season and not have any dips or blips and get some bodies back.”

Two impressive wins on the spin underline a resilience in Long’s team that has seen Oldham snap out of a mini blip to flex their muscles in the top four.

After training on Monday and Wednesday this week the players will be afforded a few days off to recharge, before preparing for a huge trip to Toulouse later in the month.
